Clients often ask me why they should pay more for a catamaran when a classic sailboat looks just fine in the brochure. I tell them: You are not just renting beds on the water. You are choosing how you interact with the sea. The decision between a catamaran vs monohull charter comes down to basic physics, deck space, and how close you want to get to the pine trees. If you are looking into a sailing yacht rental for the first time, you need facts, not sales talk. We are going to look at hull stability, the mechanics of shallow draft anchoring, and the hard truth about mooring fees Turkey will charge you. By the end of this briefing, you will know exactly which hull fits your crew.
If you have older guests or young kids, do not debate this. Book the catamaran. The lack of stairs between the aft deck and the main saloon prevents more accidents than any safety briefing I can give.
Let us talk about what happens when the afternoon Meltemi wind hits the sails. A traditional monohull is built to heel. This means the boat leans over, sometimes up to 20 or 25 degrees. The heavy lead keel under the water keeps the boat from flipping, pushing back against the wind. For sailing purists, feeling the wheel load up and the rail dip toward the water is the whole point of the trip. It is active, engaging, and traditional.
But here is the reality for your guests: When a monohull is heeling, everything becomes a chore. Walking from the cockpit to the bow means holding onto the lifelines tight. Making a sandwich in the galley down below feels like working in a funhouse. Drinks slide off tables.
A catamaran changes the physics. Because it has two hulls spread wide apart, it does not heel. It tracks flat over the water. You can leave a glass of wine on the saloon table while cruising at 8 knots, and it will stay exactly where you left it. If your group wants to play cards, read a book without feeling dizzy, or move around the boat safely while underway, hull stability is non-negotiable. This is why families overwhelmingly prefer a чартер катамарана for their holiday.
Draft is the distance from the waterline to the deepest part of the boat. A standard 50-foot monohull might have a draft of 2.2 meters (over 7 feet) because of that heavy keel. A 50-foot catamaran usually has a draft of just 1.2 to 1.4 meters.
Why does this matter? It dictates where you sleep at night.

When we sail into Göcek, the best spots are tucked deep into the bays. In Wall Bay or Göbün, the water gets shallow fast near the shoreline. With a катамаран, I can drop the anchor in 3 meters of water and back the boat right up to the rocks, tying a line to a pine tree. You can literally step off the back of the boat and swim five meters to the beach.
With a monohull, I have to stop further out. You are anchoring in 10 or 15 meters of water. If you want to go to the beach, the crew has to lower the dinghy, start the outboard motor, and drive you in. Shallow draft anchoring is a massive tactical advantage for a captain trying to find you a quiet, private spot in high season. If you want to explore the tight, shallow coves of the Turkish coast, start your search with our Göcek area listings.
Space is the most obvious difference. A monohull is shaped like a wedge. It is wide in the middle and pinches at the bow and stern. To get volume, the designers build down. On a monohull, you spend your days in the cockpit (outside), but when it is time to cook, eat inside, or sleep, you climb down a steep set of companionway stairs into the hull.
A catamaran is a rectangle. A 45-foot катамаран has the interior volume of a 60-foot monohull. The main saloon and galley are on the exact same level as the aft cockpit. You open the sliding glass doors, and the indoor and outdoor spaces become one massive living area. You can stand at the stove making eggs and talk to your friends sitting at the outdoor table.
Privacy is also better on a cat. The cabins are located down in the two separate hulls. If you have two families sharing a boat, family A takes the port hull, family B takes the starboard hull. You have physical separation. On a classic аренда парусных яхт, everyone is sharing the same central corridor down below.

I told you I would not sugarcoat the sea. All this space and stability comes with a financial penalty when you decide to leave the anchorages and head into port.
Marinas charge by area (length multiplied by beam). Because a catamaran is nearly twice as wide as a monohull of the same length, it physically occupies two mooring spaces. If you sail into Ece Saray Marina in Fethiye to top up water and go out for dinner, the dockmaster will charge you accordingly.
Generally, mooring fees for a catamaran will be 1.5 times to sometimes double the cost of a monohull. If you plan to spend every night in a marina, a catamaran will eat through your advanced provisioning allowance (APA) much faster. However, because catamarans have massive water tanks and solar panels, most of my guests choose to anchor out in the bays for free, only visiting marinas to refuel.
| Характеристика / опция | Ключевое различие | Влияние комфорта | Реальность затрат |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vessel Draft | Cat: ~1.3m | Mono: ~2.2m | Cat allows anchoring tight to the beach; Mono requires dinghy rides. | No direct cost impact, affects daily logistics. |
| Hull Stability | Cat: Flat sailing | Mono: Heels 15-25 degrees | Cat prevents seasickness and allows safe movement; Mono is active sailing. | N/A. |
| Marina Mooring Fees | Cat takes two slips. Mono takes one. | More width equals more deck space. | Cat pays 1.5x to 2x the nightly rate at marinas like Ece Saray. |
| Living Space Layout | Cat: Saloon and cockpit on one level. | Cat provides a “floating apartment” feel with separated private hulls. | Catamarans have a higher base charter rate due to volume. |
If your priority is feeling the helm, pointing high into the wind, and experiencing traditional maritime handling, rent a monohull. It is the purest form of sailing. But if you want a stable platform where you can drink coffee without spilling it, anchor close enough to hear the cicadas in the trees, and give your family room to breathe, the catamaran wins every time.

You are much less likely to get seasick on a catamaran. Monohulls roll from side to side and heel (lean over) under sail. Catamarans have two hulls that create a wide, stable base. They track flat through the water, eliminating the pendulum motion that usually triggers motion sickness.
You are paying for square footage. A 45-foot catamaran has the same interior volume and deck space as a 60-foot monohull. Building two hulls and a massive connecting saloon requires more fiberglass, more complex rigging, and usually involves two engines instead of one. The market demand for that extra space drives the price up.
It depends on the wind angle. On a broad reach (wind coming from the side/behind), catamarans are generally faster because they do not drag a heavy lead keel through the water. However, monohulls are much better at sailing upwind. A catamaran cannot point as directly into the wind as a traditional sailboat can.
